on romney's speech, releasing a new ad, reminding voters of the republican candidate's gaffe-plagued foreign trip over the summer. romney, obama aides say, is no ronald reagan, more like chevy chase. combatting that image, romney met with a group of retired generals after a speech. the romney approach would be both more muscular and bipartisan. >> if you look at harry truman and john kennedy and the use of power by bill clinton in his second term, that is a much different approach than jimmy carter and barack obama. >> reporter: to put his vision into action, romney will have to win first, which explains why he made an impromptu stop at a nearby elementary school. at this stage of the race, the pictures matter almost as much as the policies. romney did mention the obama campaign's trump card on foreign policy, the killing of osama bin laden, but he seemed to give the credit to what he called, quote, military and intelligence professionals. romney will now shift back to the economy with campaign events coming up here in virginia and also in iowa and ohio. wolf? >> jim acosta, thank you. let's

has just gotten worse. today, for example, romney gave a speech trying to sell himself as incredible commander in chief but his list of missteps is unprecedented. his disstrous british trip. he was labeled "mitt the twit," calling the operation that led to gadhafi's death a mission trip and never mind the cold war is over. maybe we wouldn't -- shouldn't be surprised that his foreign policy agenda is a mess. his team includes over a dozen former advisers to president bush. in fact, bush's defense secretary, donald rumsfeld, called romney's speef, terrific, comprehensive speech. our latest poll shows that america's people don't buy romney as commander in chief. he trails the president on that 47 to 39%. and he trails the president by 6% on foreign policy. for decades, republicans have had the edge over democrats when it comes to national security but thanks to this president's strength and romney's weakness, that trend is over. joining me now is richard wolffe, vice president and executive editor of msnbc.com and an msnbc political analyst and brian, a senior fellow at the american for

convention and mitt romney's speech set that campaign back several weeks in my opinion. they got no bump and no bounce. in fact, they probably got a negative bounce. so tonight it is incumbent on him to do two things. one is make the big picture. he's the free enterpriser and president obama is the big government planner. and those are big differences in philosophy in government. two, romney has a tax cut plan. he has a spending cut plan. he has an energy plan. he's got to make it clear. he's got to explain to people the connection between his plans and the economic recovery that we have not yet had. that's a tall order for romney. and he's going to have to fight hard for it while the, of course is attacking him. >> you said earlier i was watching kudlow and company, you said the first impression is important. he's got to swing right away. you think he'll do that? >> that's my hunch. i've seen this before. aggressive. he's got to put this sort of line in the sand. here's what i believe. and here's what he believes. and there's a big choice in this election. he is the guy who wants redist

've listened to all of these stump speeches, you probably heard them hundreds of times. the mitt romney that you've heard over the past couple of days, how has that message, how has that candidate compared to the mitt romney that you've, that you heard prior to that debate in colorado? >> yeah, i think to just add to the conversation you're having right now with the folks with you. i think that's exactly right. he's really felt looser, more relaxed. this is something he's long resisted doing. telling his more personal side. he didn't speak largely about his mormon faith on the campaign trail. but for the last two days and we expect to hear it again today, he told these personal stories and referred to a young boy he referred, 14 years old with leukemia, who referred to him as brother romney. he used to outsource that responsibility to others. and now he's taken that upon hisself. i think it a lot of it comes from the simple fact that at these events, there's a different sense of confidence in mitt romney than previously existed. a lot of people who came to his rallies for the last sever
